Should I Take the Insurance When Renting a Car?

At Morris Insurance Services, we get questions about rental cars all the time, especially during vacation seasion. "If I rent a car, should I take out the rental car insurance coverage from the rental company?"

The answer to that question is yes. Here are some reason why:

  • You are probably going to be driving in an area that you are not familiar with all of the regulations. So, are you allowed to make a legal U turn? Can you legally make a right turn on red?
  • You are going to be driving a vehicle that you are not familar with - you don't know how it handles in the rain. You aren't sure where all of the buttons and other controls are located.
  • You will be hauling your most precious cargo - your family - when you are on your vacation. If you have kids in the vehicle, they can be distractig while you are driving.
  • If you are in a popular vacation destination, many of the vehicles around you are in the same situation.
  • If you do take out the rental car insurance, you won't have a deductible to pay in case of an accident.
  • Also in case of an accident, your personal auto insurance won't be surchargeable, meaning your premiums will not go up if you take out the rental car insurance coverage.

It's generally a good idea to take out the rental car insurance when traveling for vacation. If you have any additional questions, contact the Morris Insurance office at 304.757.5477 or email us. We will be happy to help.
