Spring Home Maintenance

Some tips for home maintenance in the spring

Spring is here and we are all ready to get outside. Whether it’s to plant flowers, get the patio ready for summer or just generally spruce up your home, a little work will keep your home looking great and keep problems to a minimum.

  • Remove any buildup of leaves or other trash around your heat pump. It’s also a great time to schedule a preventive maintenance visit from your HVAC technician.  A check and tune up can keep your unit running smoothly during the hot summer months.

  • Check your downspouts, gutters, and drains to remove any built-up leaves and debris that can block water flow during heavy storms.

  • Inspect your roof. Look for damage that may have occurred during the colder months. Specifically, look for turned up shingle edges, missing shingles or even darker or light patches. If you think there may be a problem, get it check by a quality professional as soon as possible. Catching issues when they first begin can save you money and keep your home safe and dry.

  • Clean windows, patios and siding. A good thorough cleaning not only keeps your home looking good, but it can also reveal minor problems before they get dangerous. If you are strapped for time, hire a professional power washer.

  • Check sidewalks, driveways, and patios for damage. As a homeowner you are responsible for maintaining your property to prevent injury to yourself and others.

  • Check decks. Look for popped up nails or screws, damaged boards or other structural issues that can be easily corrected.  If you haven’t done so for a few years, plan to protect your wood structures with sealant to reduce wear and aging.

  • Inspect and test your weed eaters and law mowers. Consult your equipment’s owner’s manual for maintenance tips.
